With fighting on all sides, Star Trek: Discovery episode 4 really gets into some of the more complex themes we’ll be seeing throughout the season.
Star Trek: Discovery is taking us on a journey that isn’t exactly fun. Well, when is anything about traveling into unknown space fun? But this episode especially was a little stale and made me, as a fan of the series, uncomfortable.
And that’s the point, in my mind. Basically, the creature that completely tore apart the other ship from the last episode is a main focal point. Michael has a mission to try and figure out whether or not the creature is out as a predator or as prey.
What Michael learns is that its defense mechanism is what drives it only when it feels threatened. So she figures out that the creature could be used as the navigator for their spore technology to help them travel faster.
She takes this information to Paul (Anthony Rapp) and the two use the creature to help them save an entire planet that was being attacked by Klingons. Throughout all of this, Michael realized that the creature was being hurt by the navigating and continues to take care of it.
Klingon problems
Meanwhile, the Klingons are having issues all their own while the family of T’Kuvma is falling apart because of Kol. There’s a lot of confusion and everyone turning on each other and honestly, it feels a little not like the Star Trek we know and love. This is the first time in the series that I, personally, felt that way.
Another interesting part is that every time the show goes to the Klingons, they’re in subtitles. Which isn’t new, but it does take a second if you’re not really watching as intently as you should.
Overall, the episode was pretty good. It showed a side of Michael I really enjoyed and in the end, we got a little Captain Phillipa while she read her Will and Testament to Michael.
