The BBC has taken the most obvious route for Kit Harington’s Gunpowder miniseries, but there’s still no consolation for Americans.
Back when Gunpowder, otherwise known as Kit Harington Gets to Wear a Cool Hat, first arrived on everyone’s radar, yours truly predicted that it would air starting on Oct. 21, then wrap up on Nov. 4, due to the subject matter. (After all, the reports had it that the show would air on Saturdays, and Nov. 5 is a Sunday this year.)
In what doesn’t really seem like much of a surprise, the BBC has come through to confirm that that’s exactly what it’s planning to do with the cool hat wearer (and also Liv Tyler).
See if you can also catch Mark Gatiss in the new teaser that accompanied this announcement:
And yet, even though I talked about why it would make sense to air it here a month ago, BBC America’s Twitter account remains strangely silent about anything Gunpowder-related as of this writing. Granted, the announcement for the British side of things happened quite early on American shores, but the most recent tweet from BBCA (again, as of this writing) is about a New York Comic-Con event.
So, let’s just remain calm and talk clothes for a second here.
What kind of angle would you say that is for Robert Catesby’s chapeau? Jaunty just doesn’t seem to cut it. Rogueish, perhaps, to accommodate his accompanying smolder? Rakish might be a bridge too far, though.
Either way, BBC One’s tagline of “Pure Drama” means that we are definitely in the clear to call this hat dramatic. Even though Harington’s dress is pretty plain, in terms of the color palette, there’s a lot of frippery and finery for James I’s costumes, as we can see the king in this trailer as well. James even gets a neck ruff! So does Liv Tyler’s character, who, as reported by Deadline, is actually one of our protagonist’s relatives — although hers is far less fancy.
