Grey’s Anatomy’s 300th episode will ‘pay tribute’ to everyone, including fans

Sometime during season 14, Grey’s Anatomy will air its 300th episode.  And according to the writer behind it, it will be a nostalgic episode for everyone.

Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that Grey’s Anatomy is 14 seasons deep in heartache and incredible storytelling. When I watched the season 14 premiere last Thursday, I almost forgot about George O’Malley and some of the roller coasters (and plane rides) we’ve been on over the past decade and change. Of course, that’s only because the show has done an incredible job rotating out characters without sacrificing character development. Plus, they know when to pull the plug when something’s not working. No pun intended.

This year, the show promises a much “lighter” season. But even “lighter” things tend to pack an emotional punch for Grey’s Anatomy fans. When you love the characters as much I do, everything feels remarkably significant, even when it’s not meant to be.

The season 14 premiere put us on a path that felt decidedly un-light as we discovered that Amelia has been living with a brain tumor for quite some time. Moving forward, this storyline will unfold, perhaps even beyond the 300th episode that cast members and crew recently celebrated.

According to Krista Vernoff, the episode was written “as a love letter to the fans who have been watching all 14 years.” So, to be clear, Grey’s Anatomy filled 14 years with incredible romances, heartbreaking deaths, gut-wrenching surgeries, and custody battles. Basically, pick a drama, Grey’s Anatomy probably did it already.

Further, Vernoff added:

"“If there is a feel to the episode, it is nostalgia. And if there is a theme of the episode, it is the ghosts of our past. So I have found a way to pay some small tribute to everyone who has been here before.”"

While that sounds like an extremely creative undertaking, I’m excited to see what the 300th episode has in store and who will return to celebrate it.
