The idea of Harry Potter as a joke is something funny in British media

Watching anything British, there tends to be at least one joke about Harry Potter in it. And it is quite funny to think about.

British humor is fun and if you’re watching a modern English movie, there will probably be a Harry Potter joke. For instance, in Travels with my Father, the Jack Whitehall Netflix special, there is a moment when Jack is playing polo on an elephant.

His father, Michael, is yelling at him from the sidelines and makes a joke about how the polo stick isn’t a wand and that Jack isn’t Harry Potter. Now this isn’t the first time there’s been a Harry Potter joke in a movie.

Remember Love Actually? Great Britain did, after all, is the land of Harry Potter. But it is just funny because really, Great Britain is the only one who can make these jokes. While we Americans try, it doesn’t quite hit as hard.

It’s not that you can’t make a joke about the series if you’re not from Great Britain. But, honestly, we didn’t create it and it isn’t based in our country. So when you make a joke about Harry and his friends, it falls a little flat.

Mainly because it seems as if you’re just making fun of the series rather than commenting on something that is part of your culture. So, to me, I think when someone from England makes a joke about Potter, it just hits a lot harder for us to laugh at. So maybe we Americans shouldn’t make fun of the series. Because really, who doesn’t love it anyway?
