Marvel’s Inhumans debuted its first two episodes on ABC. We welcome our new Inhuman overlords. See what the Royal Family gets into with our Inhumans recap.

Welcome to our coverage of Marvel’s Inhumans! We here at Culturess are excited for it to finally be here… mostly so we can see if it really is as much of a travesty as critics have said.

So how do these first two episodes fare? Let’s dive in!

Not-So-Short Summary

On Oahu, a teenage girl being chased meets Triton. He tries to get far enough away from the men with guns to get her safely to Attilan, but she’s killed in the crossfire.

And then we get our first look at Medusa’s hair in action. And in bed, oddly enough. It’s… not terrible, but not super great. Welcome to Attilan, completely invisible outside of its barriers. They have an impressive amount of broken moon rovers in their collection, courtesy of Gorgon, who likes to smash them with his hooves.

Maximus desperately wants to go to Earth, their rightful home. He’s riling up the lower classes and is even angrier when he finds out Triton died on a secret mission. And getting told off/choked by Medusa when he tries to hit on her for their lost childhood love.

And the mutiny begins. To a knock-off Doors song. And a knockoff Rolling Stones song. Looks like Maximus was behind Triton’s death on earth. I’m also guessing that one Royal Guard’s power was to freeze Medusa’s hair–or just freeze other Inhuman powers in general?

Black Bolt is about to murder Maximus with his voice when Lockjaw teleports him to Earth to join Medusa, Karnak, and Gorgon.

MARVEL’S INHUMANS – “Behold…The Inhumans” – The highly anticipated new Marvel television series “Marvel’s Inhumans” makes its debut on the small screen with the network premiere of the series’ first two episodes on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. Medusa hitches a ride on a tour bus back to the city. Black Bolt is somewhere in the city, and Gorgon and Karnak are out in the wilderness, Gorgon still looking for Triton. He befriends some local people and tells his story about needing to get back to the moon. “Cool,” they say.

Don’t worry, Karnak’s been stuck on this island before — no wait, wrong show.

This second episode is a lot of single characters walking around trying to get their bearings straight, Maximus sitting on a throne he has so long coveted, and Crystal (the only member of the Royal Family who didn’t make it to Earth) locked in her room.

Gorgon goads one of Maximus’s key people down to Hawaii while Black Bolt goes on a shopping spree to ELO. Finally, a good song! And he also just kind of walks out with the suit on, but it leads to some of his best facial expressions of the show so far.

And, you know, cops tasing him and a gasp flipping a cop car over. Too bad he’s in police custody now. At least his cell has a fantastic view of the moon.

Oh, and his right-hand lady? Stabbed to death by Medusa. Good for her.

Just kidding! The right-hand lady whose name I don’t know can revive herself! Zoran? Is that what she said?

Badass Moment of the Week

Gorgon’s awesome fight against Maximus’s dudes on earth. That was fun and badass. I liked the hoof stomp.

Best One-Liner

“This is why nobody invites you to do their birthday toast,” Gorgon tells Karnak.

I didn’t touch on the space logistics division that’s tracking all the crap going on on the moon. There’s not a lot to say. And I don’t understand why they’re working in a ten-foot space in a giant-ass empty warehouse.

It’s cool to see the super ceremonial version of the Terrigenesis. We saw a mere sliver of it in what Jiaying was doing in her little hideaway, but this is the full-blown taste. With a lot fewer rock cocoons.

Next week’s Inhumans shows Maximus sending backup to Earth. And a prison break! Looks like fun. Join us again next week.
