Netflix reimagines Stranger Things as a teen romance

Netflix’s new Stranger Things trailer reimagines the show as a 1980s rom-com about Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan. And it’s actually amazing.

Keeping with their nostalgic, throwback marketing, Netflix just came out with a new trailer reimagining Stranger Things as an actually-perfect teen romantic comedy (because io9 is so right) from the ’80s called Love in the Upside Down.

The trailer is about the ultimate high school couple, Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler. They had it all, until the “guy that no one noticed”, Jonathan Byers, entered the picture and changed everything. Soon, Nancy was trapped in a tragic love triangle. Would she choose popular guy Steve, or nice, quiet, weird photographer Jonathan?

“What happens when love gets strange?” the trailer asks.

Violence ensues, there’s plenty of angst, and we see everything else you’d expect from a classic teen rom-com. While there are no monsters appearing in this trailer, we know from Stranger Things, of course, that there’s the added complication of the Demogorgon.

While the majority of Stranger Things, was about the horror and mystery, the love triangle between Nancy, Steve and Jonathan was an intriguing subplot.

Of course, Nancy wound up choosing Steve at the end of season 1 of Stranger Things, but she remained friends with Jonathan, while Steve stuck up a friendship with him too. Some fans were rooting for Jonathan, though, especially since Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton might actually be dating in real life.

But we’ll just have to see what happens in season 2. Spoilers say that we’ll see more of the love triangle in the coming season.

“We did get the first couple scripts and it’s insane,” David Harbour previously said of season 2. “Even when I was watching [season 1] I felt torn. They both were so three dimensional … There will be more of that for seasons to come.”
