Finally, we are exploring space once more with the Star Trek crew. Tonight Discovery premiered and we have recaps of the first two episodes!
Star Trek has always been a source of peace. It is what Starfleet represents. And what do we need more than anything now? Peace. So it is perfect timing for Star Trek: Discovery to premiere! And this show couldn’t be better.
We’re taking a look at the first two episodes of the first season and get ready, we’re going to boldy go where no man has gone before.
Episode one
The first episode sets up a lot of who Michael Burnham is. While she is the adoptive daughter of Sarek and Amanda (meaning she’s Spock’s sister), Michael is much more. And we saw just how amazing she is.
Klingon war
“We come in peace” is pretty much the Starfleet motto and, in this universe, it is despised by the Klingons. Or at least it is in the beginning. The first shot we see in Star Trek: Discovery is a speech. We are with the Klingon leader as he speaks about his hatred towards the idea behind it which basically means he hates Starfleet.
Then we get one of the most inspiring moments on television. Two women of color, a captain and her first officer, took to a planet and walked a pattern into the sand. That pattern? The Starfleet symbol and it is truly emotional.
Number one
Something Captain Philippa Georgiou does that is amazing is call Michael Burnham her “Number 1”. It is because Michael is her First Officer but still, it is just emotional to see these two women supporting each other.
From there, Philippa lets Michael go on a mission by herself and it, in turn, doesn’t end up so great. Michael flies into an area the U.S.S Shenzhou cannot get into. And who does she meet? A Klingon. There, Michael is lost in space while Philippa is frantically searching for her.
Vulcans all have that haircut
While we kind of knew already that Michael was the adoptive sister to Spock, we got to see a flashback where Michael as a little girl was taking the Vulcan test and guess what? Even humans on Vulcan have to have that haircut!
It was heartbreaking to see, knowing that it is how her parents died but to see Sarek and the other Vulcans was pretty cool. When Michael wakes up from being treated from her fight with the Klingon, she instantly runs to the bridge.
And what happens? Philippa actually believes her that Klingons are there to fight. Because in this world, they haven’t been seen for hundreds of years but she trusts her number one without fail.
The episode pretty much ends with the two preparing to fight the Klingons. Oh right, and the mutiny on the Shenzhou. That’s right because this entire episode, they were on the U.S.S Shenzhou, not the Discovery. And Michael had to get to the Discovery so they had her cause a mutiny against her captain to fight the Klingons.
Also the best part of the episode: Michael standing up to Philippa as well as pulling the “I was raised by Vulcans card”.
