Is Peggy Carter in Avengers: Infinity War, or is it just wishful thinking?
New rumors suggest that Hayley Atwell may be reprising her role as Peggy Carter in the upcoming Avengers sequels. But we shouldn’t hold our breaths.
Did Hayley Atwell just tease the return of Peggy Carter to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The basic answer boils down to … maybe?
Atwell shared a photo of herself on Instagram on Saturday (with a tip of the hat to io9), wearing curlers and mo-cap dots on her face.
What does this mean? First introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy stole the hearts of Marvel fans. As a result of her popularity, Marvel Television launched a spin-off for her beloved character. Unfortunately, ABC canceled the series after only two seasons.
Peggy may have been laid to rest in Captain America: Civil War, but that doesn’t mean that her role will no longer be reprised. And if the recent photo is any indication, the legendary war veteran might just be returning for Avengers: Infinity War. Or the untitled Infinity War sequel. Or both. Can it be both?
The rumor mill has been buzzing pretty loudly since way back in July. Let’s check out the evidence.
A visit to Marvel Studios HQ
Back in July, fans took note when Atwell visited producer Louis D’Esposito. And while terms of their meeting weren’t disclosed, she could quite easily have just been paying a visit to an old friend.
Casting call features flashback to the 1960s
To add more fuel to the fire, a recent casting call for “Mary Lou” (the working title for the Avengers films) was seeking actresses with “no modern colors or cuts” to play secretaries and female engineers in the 1960s. This seemingly suggests that the Russo brothers are/will be filming a flashback sequence of sorts in a time period when Peggy was very much alive.

Also, with the Time Gem expected to come into play, could the Avengers be traveling back in time?
Motion capture for Peggy
If Atwell’s Instagram post does happen to nod to the Avengers films, it would not be the first time mo-cap dots have been used to age her up.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier used motion capture to show an elderly Peggy speaking with Steve (Chris Evans) at her bedside. She was also aged up in Ant-Man for a flashback sequence set in the late 1980s.
So, is it true? Maybe not
Given Marvel Studios’ strict hush-hush policies, it seems unlikely that they would allow her to post such a photo. There’s also the fact that she is working on another Disney-backed project, Christopher Robin, though it is unclear why her character would be aged up or de-aged (recent Christopher Robin set photos have shown her sporting a different look).
We are unsure why the Avengers films would have reason to bring Peggy into its narrative, though it could be part of how Captain America’s story will wrap up. (I don’t even want to talk about it.)

I personally would love to see another look at Peggy. Wouldn’t you? Avengers: Infinity War is currently in post-production, expected to be released on May 4, 2018. The untitled Infinity War sequel is currently filming, scheduled for release on May 3, 2019.
