Sia and Maddie Ziegler team up on ‘Rainbow’ for My Little Pony: The Movie

Sia’s new track “Rainbow” now has an accompanying music video, starring the pony version of herself in My Little Pony: The Movie and, of course, teenage dance superstar Maddie Ziegler.

Promotion for My Little Pony: The Movie is ramping up fast. The mane six take on an underwater adventure in theaters October 6, and one of the new characters introduced is Songbird Serenade. She’s the pony version of pop superstar Sia, who of course released a song for the film. The music video stars Maddie Ziegler, who’s previously worked with Sia on the videos for “Chandelier” and “The Greatest”.

In the “Rainbow” music video, which premiered Tuesday on Entertainment Weekly, Ziegler delivers another fabulous performance in her Sia wig. The 14 year-old dancer’s routine is intercut with clips from My Little Pony: The Movie, wherein the characters from the Friendship Is Magic series are unexpectedly transported to an underwater world.

Sia’s lyrics celebrate the overall theme of My Little Pony: that friendship is magic, and can help cure any ill. Ziegler begins the video downtrodden, in a dark, rainy place. She ends it literally rising through the air, mirroring a clip from the film. Likewise, the lyrics suggest that to get through pain, you have to feel it first.

"You fall so low but shoot so highBig dreamers shoot for open skySo much life in those open eyesSo much depth, you look for the lightBut when your wounds open, you will cryYou’ll cry out now and you’ll question why"

From the movie trailer, it’s obvious that Twilight Sparkle and her friends will have to help the villainous Tempest Shadow overcome her pain. Her alicorn horn is broken, and she comes into Equestria seeking complete and total surrender. Of course the power of friendship has to save her. What else?
