Kingsman: The Golden Circle give us more of what we didn’t love about the first film

Did you hate the sexism in the first Kingsman movie but love the cool fight scenes and characters? Well, the sequel has more sexism and less everything else.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was fine. It’s the best way I can describe it without giving anything away. Basically, the movie is what you’d expect from the series, but it is a bit more sexist and less violent (really the opposite of what you’d expect).

I went into this movie being someone who wasn’t particularly upset by the sexism in the first film. It is what it is with that kind of movie and I figure when they realized a lot of their fanbase was comprised of women, they’d change their game.

Clearly, I was wrong. This one took the sexism to a new level that I didn’t really care for because it was unnecessary and just there to make the movie seem edgy. While the storyline was interesting, it was almost too cheesy and trying to recreate moments that weren’t ready to happen yet.

There was a great instance where Harry is recreating his “Manners Maketh Man” moment but he’s not up to par and the scene ends with him, Eggsy, and Merlin all having a conversation while Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) is fighting everyone in the bar.

This isn’t to say there aren’t great moments that make this worthwhile. I came out of the movie so happy that the sequel to one of my favorite movies was actually decent. But it is upsetting that it seems like the commentary about what we didn’t like from the first was just ignored.

Should they continue the series?

I think so. Especially if, this time, they keep our complaints in mind and actually make a spy movie that doesn’t have to diminish women to villains, secondary characters, or hopeless love interests.
In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall film. What I didn’t love was the sexism running rampant through a lot of the movie.

I’d give it 2.5 stars because it still gave me a wonderfully fleshed out Eggsy, and who doesn’t love spy Colin Firth?
