Going to the closing of any musical can be a bit overwhelming and that’s especially true of Groundhog Day the Musical. So of course I cried.
I’ve gone to the closing of two musicals in my time: American Psycho and Groundhog Day. You know what isn’t fun? Going to closing performances. It is heartbreaking. And it is especially true with Groundhog Day the Musical because the show is pretty upsetting.
Basically it focuses on Phil Conors, the weatherman who hates the holiday. Throughout the musical, he continues to relive the same day over and over again, until he learns what is important in life.
Seeing this show the first time, I was crying because well, it is one of those that tugs on your heart and won’t let you go. If you had your time again, over and over, what would you do with it? Going to the closing performance, I figured that I’d be a mess but I was openly weeping throughout the show because it just shows us the importance of living in the moment.
We should be decent people and not take those around us for granted, as Phil does before he learns, and it makes us examine our time. It also helped that I saw John Cleese before going in and flipped out.
But either way, this show was just so charming and fun and it is so upsetting that it is now gone. Which is kind of ironic. The show is all about repeating the same day until Phil learns what it is to be a decent person. But now the show is gone so I guess it finally is Feb. 3 from now on.
