On Monday, Warner Bros. and MGM shared a teaser poster featuring a first look at Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the forthcoming Tomb Raider origin film.
If you grew up playing revolutionary action-adventure video game Tomb Raider on PlayStation, Sega Saturn, or MS-DOS, the version of English archaeologist Lara Croft you know is a badass female explorer, akin to Indiana Jones, whose multidimensional portrayal allows her to be sexy and lethal at the same time.
The original Tomb Raider game was released in 1996 and followed up with five sequels. In that storyline, Lara is an experienced archaeologist, adept at solving puzzles and taking down enemies of all shapes and sizes, from wolves and sharks to humans and Greek gods.
Lara transitioned to the big screen in 2001 when Paramount pictures released Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, with Angelina Jolie playing the titular hero. At the time, Jolie was considered by most to be a natural Lara, though some took offense to an American actress playing a British character.
But the film itself, as well as its follow-up, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, was overly stylized and lacking in substance. It didn’t do the Lara of the video game series justice.
Then, in 2013, a reboot of the series, Tomb Raider, was released, featuring a young, inexperienced Lara and establishing her origin story. This wasn’t the Lara we had grown up with, but she was more interesting, more relatable, and in some ways more fun to play.
The game was lauded, with IGN giving it a near-perfect score. And it established an opportunity for another shot at a film adaptation.
Enter Vikander:
In April 2016, MGM and GK Films announced a remake of the 2001 film, to star Vikander and be directed by Roar Uthaug.
If you didn’t think Jolie was the right choice for Lara the first time around, here is a truly exceptional opportunity for Vikander to inhabit one of the most beloved female heroines of pop culture.
And if you loved Jolie’s turn in the previous films, Vikander’s portrayal of a younger, greener, more vulnerable Lara can only enrich the Tomb Raider universe.
The rebooted Lara reflects the changing sensibilities of the 2010s; she’s more, ahem, appropriately proportioned, and she wears long pants instead of cheek-skimming shorts, which only feels logical.
The small-but-mighty Vikander, with her big brown eyes and expressive face, looks like the perfect Lara Croft in the initial poster.
“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience,” Vikander told EW in July. “She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet.”
It’s an adventure we can’t wait to go on with her.
Tomb Raider will be released on March 16, 2018. We’ll get to see the first trailer for it on Tuesday.
