Star Wars: When are all of the movies are coming out?

You might know exactly when Star Wars: The Last Jedi is coming out, but what about the other franchise films already announced and planned?

If you’re a Star Wars enthusiast, you probably have at least one of the dates that we’re about to go over, but there have been some changes in the galaxy far, far away as of late, and it’s time to go over them.

Dec. 15, 2017: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

You know it. It’s the second film of the new trilogy kicked off by The Force Awakens. It has not moved at all. Rian Johnson’s directing. The movie has added in Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, who might just be Star Wars‘ first confirmed queer character thanks to Leia, Princess of Alderaan, and it’s supposed to show off Poe Dameron in a souped-up X-Wing. Now that we’re in the post-Force Friday II window, we might just get a few more bits of information, like what General Leia’s role will look like. Right now, tickets have not gone on sale … but they’re on the horizon.

May 25, 2018: Han Solo

As far as we know, Alden Ehrenreich’s first outing as Han Solo is still set for May 2018, even if it doesn’t have a name, which has actually become a running joke on now-director Ron Howard’s shots from the filming. He’s revealed that Paul Bettany is part of the movie, that Donald Glover’s already taken care of his work as Lando Calrissian, and more.

Dec. 20, 2019: Star Wars: Episode IX

Here’s the biggest recent move. Yesterday, when Lucasfilm casually revealed that it had lined up J.J. Abrams (and not Rian Johnson) to take over the last film of the new trilogy, it also shifted that film’s release date.

So, a new director and release date in one day. That’s a bigger boom than the Death Star. (Or at least it’s comparable … insert your R2-D2 screams here.)

Can we really blame Lucasfilm for wanting more of those sweet, sweet Christmas-fueled bucks in both tickets and merchandise? Force Friday III, because there’s probably going to be a Force Friday III, is going to be completely bonkers in 2019.

2020?: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Our very favorite slightly uptight Jedi Knight is reportedly going to have a movie all to himself, with Stephen Daldry supposed to get behind the camera.

Next: In defense and praise of Kathleen Kennedy

Beyond 2020 — which is only three years away — there’s no telling what might happen next. A sequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy? It’s not clear right now, but four movies is enough to satisfy fans for now.
