Going to any con can be nerve wracking and DragCon was not fun. Well, it wasn’t fun if you have anxiety and can’t take disorganization.
DragCon was this weekend. And while I was excited to see my favorite queens, it was also the most upsetting experience. I hate crowds so most cons I have to be mentally prepared. What’s unfortunate is that nothing could have prepared me for this.
It was just so unorganized. My favorite thing about New York Comic Con is that the convention makes you pre-purchase your pictures and autographs. So you’re not waiting in line for the longest time without the prospect of actually getting a picture.
With this one, they’d just cut lines off then open them back up. There was no set schedule of when the queens would come and go and meeting RuPaul was virtually impossible. Everything was just a little too much to handle. And if you’re not great with crowds and people, it can drive you crazy.
More often then not, I was outside just people watching. I ran away from the convention because I needed to escape. Which isn’t really how you want to spend your time at a convention that you spend money to go to.
So am I glad that I went? Kind of. I got to see some queens I love and bought a lovely bracelet but it was almost not worth the stress. Running around and fighting through crowds was not really how I wanted to spend my weekend.
Next: Gal Gadot is a giggler but you might have to ask Chris Pine about it
But at the end of the day, it is about finding a place to belong. That’s why most the drag queens do what they do and why we, as fans, love watching the show and going to their performances. It is about belonging and feeling free as a person.
