Emmys 2017: Why Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg should win

The idea of Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg hosting a dinner party was a stroke of genius. This unlikely culinary duo could win an Emmy for their Potluck Dinner Party.

The culinary queen Martha Stewart epitomizes kitchen perfection. From the immaculate kitchen décor to the impressive feasts, the domestic goddess inspires many people to strive to develop their inner Martha Stewart. Snoop Dogg has very different reputation and it involves smoke.

Seemingly a very unusual culinary duo, Stewart and Snoop Dogg have conquered the food television market. Winning a 2017 Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program would be a huge celebration.

Last year VH1 debuted Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. The premise of the show is relatively simple. A couple of celebrities enjoy a dinner party with Martha and Snoop. Each dinner party has a theme and each host creates a meaningful dish. Everyone thought that this pairing would highlight a divergent culinary approach. Instead, it showed everyone how we all have commonalities.

The best part of a potluck dinner party is bringing together different flavors, ideas and people. If everyone brought the same dish or had the same personality, the dinner party would be boring. The Stewart and Snoop Dogg show is the perfect blend of these complementing scenarios.

One of the reasons this show works so well is that it alters people’s perception. For example, many people view Stewart as the prim and proper queen of cuisine. While I haven’t personally had dinner with Stewart, this show makes me believe that she swears, drinks and is a person that I want to have at my table.

Additionally, the reality show gives a different side of Snoop Dogg. Instead the just a proponent of pot, Snoop comes across as a down to earth, everyman. While he may not be throwing your neighborhood barbecue, he is very relatable.

As an avid cook and wannabe foodie, I enjoy watching the Potluck Dinner Party for my own party inspiration. Granted a few of the dishes were a little odd, though the concepts seem adaptable. I might not make an elevated, old school, family-inspired dish, but I could throw a dinner party inspired by family. After all, the dinner party is about the experience not just the food.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have some big competition in the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program. The other nominees are Gordon Ramsay for MasterChef Junior, Alex Baldwin for Matchgame, RuPaul for RuPaul’s Drag Race, W. Kamau Bell for United States of America with W. Kamau Bell and Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for Project Runway.

Of course, everyone loves Alec Baldwin’s Trump character on SNL. I think that his Emmy win would be more likely in that category, not the host catergory. Gordon Ramsay’s show is okay, but the kids’ cooking show is a little cheesy. The Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn pair could be a formidable challenge to Stewart and Snoop. The Project Runway team have a great chemistry together. Plus, everyone loves Tim Gunn. Still, I give the edge to Stewart and Snoop Dogg.

Hopefully, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg pull out the big win on Emmy night. Who would think that Snoop could win an Emmy before he won a Grammy? VH1 made a great call on this reality television show. The second season can’t come soon enough.
