Sorry, guys, Disney will be taking Star Wars and Marvel movies off Netflix
By Buckie Wells
As Disney plans to end its partnership with Netflix and start its own streaming service, it looks like they’ll be taking Star Wars and Marvel with them.
Streaming platforms are all the rage right now. As more and more people make the decision to give up cable and move to digital-only services, the new game is finding out which subscriptions are worth it and which ones aren’t. Of course, leading contenders include services like Netflix and HBO. Both boast a ton of original and binge-worthy content, but Netflix enjoys a particularly sweet deal with Disney that gives them rights to stream all the Star Wars and Marvel movies shortly after they hit digital.
Or at least, they used to. Or they will until 2019, I guess.
As several television networks (CBS All Access) and brands (DC Comics) try to carve a space into this new digital area, Disney also wants to throw its hat in the ring. By 2019, Disney will go all-in with original content and become the exclusive platform for all things House of Mouse. Which, unfortunately, will include Star Wars films like Rogue One and Marvel movies like Captain America: Civil War.
As Disney CEO Bob Iger explained:
"We’ve now decided we will put the Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ movies on this app as well."
It’s really simple, guys. Disney has the hits and they know they can entice people to subscribe for a moderately fair or possibly high price point.
Though the platform isn’t expected until late 2019, we do know a few more details.
"Disney plans to produce four or five original movies per year, as well as an equal number of original series and TV movies. A price for the subscription has not yet been announced."
Basically, you’ll probably have to pay for High School Musical 4.

At this point, the official tally is Disney: 2, Netflix: 1. So how will Netflix respond to this backstabbing-but-totally-expected debacle? We shall see.
