Magic School Bus, The Snowman, and Insidious: Trailer Tuesday

Another week, another collection of movies and shows on the fall horizon, from a beloved cartoon reboot to a horrifying-looking horror flick.

Fall represents two distinct overall vibes, for me. One is the freshness and possibilities that come with a new school year. The other is the crisp creepiness of the Halloween season. This week’s collection of trailers worth checking out embraces both. From back-to-school adventures for a new generation on Netflix to terrifying haunted thrills, there’s plenty to look out for in the coming months. Here are a few sneak peeks:

The Magic School Bus Rides Again

Release date: Sept. 29

Ms. Frizzle’s handing over the keys of her radical ride to her younger sister in the new Netflix iteration of the classic book and cartoon series The Magic School Bus, which now Rides Again. Two things about this newly-released trailer make it extra exciting. First, it introduces us to Kate McKinnon as the new Frizzle in town (Lily Tomlin voices the original and will apparently be making some appearances too) and we can’t think of anyone better suited to take on the fearless fantasy field trip-leader than McKinnon. Second, the new theme song for the show is sung by LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA, further proving that man is non-stop (to be read to the tune of the Hamilton song of the same name, obviously). Seriously, between heading up the music for the upcoming Mary Poppins reboot, the live-action Little Mermaid, and everything else he’s working on, Miranda has pretty much cornered the market on enviable musical projects. Which is all to say, we’ll definitely be watching this series.

The Snowman

Release date: Oct. 13

Then things get significantly darker in the new international trailer for The Snowman, a thriller based off Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbo’s popular work. The adaptation has Michael Fassbander in the lead role as unfortunately-named detective Harry Hole (which is apparently pronounced Hoo-leh, according to Uproxx) who has been chasing down a serial killer for years. We have a hard time taking a thriller called The Snowman seriously as it recalls terrible movies that featured anthropomorphic snowmen as the killer like the 1990s Jack Frost franchise or as the regenerated dead dad like in the bizarro Michael Keaton family drama, also called Jack Frost. But if we can ever get past that, this one does look pretty compelling.

Insidious: The Last Key

Release date: Jan. 5

Full disclosure: Horror movies are not, personally, my thing. That being said, I am intrigued by the fact that this one has what appears to be a badass middle-aged woman in the protagonist role.

The creature driving a key-finger into a terrified young woman’s throat? Less intriguing.
