On Sunday night’s episode 7 of Insecure’s second season, the “Hella Disrespectful” episode title fits because that’s exactly what this episode was.
Issa gets disrespected…again
Issa, having regained the use of her left eye, debriefs Molly on her sexy night gone bad with Daniel and both agree that his actions were disrespectful. Issa is less than supportive when Molly reveals that she’s still seeing Dro. Upset at feeling judged by Issa, Molly decides that they should both just allow each other to do their own thing. Issa then learns that not only will Lawrence be at Derek’s party, but also that he blocked her on Facebook.
Issa patches things up with Freida at work and looks for ways to be more inclusive of Latino students at We Got Y’all. One of Issa’s students informs her that Vice Principal Gaines has been telling Latino students that the program is full. Issa confronts Vice Principal Gaines, who doesn’t take her concerns seriously, but tells her no one’s keeping her from accepting Latino students.
Daniel calls Issa to apologize for the previous night and is almost forgiven. Almost. But once again, someone’s mouth causes discord in their relationship, only this time it isn’t Issa’s. Daniel implies that the embarrassment Issa felt should show her how he felt when she called him an itch she needed to scratch last season. Issa gets angry all over again and tells Daniel never to call her again.
Lawrence might be about to take a W?
Lawrence and his new work bae Aparna have been hanging out but Lawrence wishes to keep their relationship on the low at work (probably the best decision he’s made this season, tbh). After agreeing to go out for drinks with Aparna that weekend, Lawrence backs out once he remembers that he’d already planned to go to Derek’s birthday party. Aparna invites herself along as Lawrence’s date.
Molly’s quest to break the glass ceiling continues
After a pep talk from L’il Rell (a.k.a. Slim Thick Witcho Pastor’s Body) and discovering the amazingness that is Garrett’s Popcorn, Molly approaches the partners at her law firm to ask for a raise. Unfortunately, the partners blow her off, leaving Molly more discouraged. Making matters worse, Molly learns that Dro will also be at Derek’s birthday party with his wife Candace.
A Dinner of Follies
Molly, Lawrence, and Issa’s storylines all converge at Derek’s party that evening
Issa arrives at Derek’s party with her brother as her date and while things initially go smoothly, Issa doesn’t handle seeing Lawrence and Aparna together well.
Issa leaves the party to get some air and Lawrence comes out to talk to her. However, the heart-to-heart descends into an argument when Issa calls out Lawrence for bringing Aparna and blocking her. Lawrence admits to blocking Issa to avoid seeing her photos with Daniel. You know? The one photo that Issa didn’t even post where she and Daniel were in the upper right 1/8th of the picture and Lawrence had to zoom all the way in to even see them? Yeah, that photo. #LawrenceisTrash.
Issa claps back that Daniel had more going on than Lawrence and mentions all the time she spent supporting him while he was unemployed. Lawrence calls Issa a f**** h*** and leaves. See? Disrespectful. Lawrence goes to get drinks with Aparna and kisses her.
Meanwhile, after being ignored by Dro throughout the entire party, Molly finally gets some alone time with him in the hallway. After Dro reaffirms that he and Molly have something special, the two engage in some bathroom stall lovemaking (I tried to dress up the language and it still sounds gross–Molly, you’re better than a sink screw!). But this proves to be the last straw for Molly, who decides she can’t be with Dro anymore.
After the party, Issa comes home to learn that her landlord is raising her rent. The episode ends with Issa trashing her apartment.
And scene.
My thoughts.
- Okay, Issa was definitely dramatic, but Lawrence calling her out of her name was hypocritical and completely out of line. My rule—if you can’t call me anything nice, my government name will do.
- Lawrence was also stupid for bringing Aparna to the party uninvited and showing up underdressed. I honestly think he lashed out at Issa because of his own embarrassment.
- Good for Molly for ending things with Dro. Now let’s see how long it lasts.
- Dro really knows how to flatter women. Molly has worn some fierce dresses on the show but I refuse to believe that one was his favorite.
- Tiffany’s fakeness makes me nauseous.
- Also, real friends don’t judge you for having bathroom sex—they just help you fix your wig.
