Is a female-led Lord of the Flies really necessary?

In the world of things we don’t really need, a female-led Lord of the Flies is one of them. Especially since the original story was meant to be all male.

Lord of the Flies is taught to us in school and many of us always asked why it was all male. Not because we wanted to be trapped on a deserted island but rather because we thought it might be sexist.

In fact, it is the opposite. According to many sources, Goulding himself simply didn’t believe it would work with women. His vision was for a scaled down vision of society and, to Goulding, that was a version where it was just little boys.

But as he said, it wasn’t  about equality. Instead, it was to show the barebones of society and really, the desperation that lies within the male psyche in times of struggle.

"This has nothing to do with equality at all. I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men; they are far superior and always have been."

So what does Hollywood decide to do? Have an all-female Lord of the Flies directed by two men. This is the opposite of what we need. Why? Because we should be having stories with female leads being written by, oh I don’t know, women maybe?

Part of the problem isn’t the lack of female roles. While it is still a problem, it is more of a ‘quality over quantity’ issue. The reason why Wonder Woman was so revolutionary because while it was a male writer, it was a woman telling the story (with Patty Jenkins directing it).

But it seems as if everyone is missing the point and just throwing together ‘female’ things rather than giving us ladies the quality we yearn for. Will we ever get that? Who knows. Instead, we’ll get this Lord of the Flies.
