The Red Wedding, Game of Thrones

A wedding is supposed to be the happiest day of one’s life, but unfortunately, that’s rarely the case if your last name happens to be Stark.

We’re ending this look back at pop culture’s greatest and most memorable weddings with one of the most shocking scenes in all of literature or television: Game of ThronesRed Wedding between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey.

Some of the other weddings on this list have also ended in death, but the Red Wedding took fans’ fears about a favorite character dying and multiplied them exponentially; the event saw Robb Stark, the King in the North; his wife, Queen Talisa; Lady Catelyn; and about 15,000 of Robb’s banner-men massacred. In perhaps the event’s most tragic loss, Frey crossbowmen also killed Robb’s direwolf, Grey Wind.

The massacre was arranged by Lord Walder Frey, the host of the wedding, as revenge for Robb breaking his marriage pact with House Frey.

Book readers knew the scene was coming; those who only watch Game of Thrones on HBO were utterly shocked.

Regardless, it was a devastating scene and undoubtedly one of the most memorable (and most watched; “The Rains of Castamere” had 6.3 million viewers) weddings in pop culture history.
