15 best weddings in pop culture ranked by how memorable they’d be to attend
The Purple Wedding, Game of Thrones
Unlike the infamous “Red Wedding,” the Game of Thrones source material itself doesn’t refer to the union of King Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell as the “Purple Wedding;” rather, fans of series nicknamed this oh-so-happy day as such.
It’s strange that a wedding that ends with the groom drinking and dying from poisoned wine would be such a celebrated pop-culture event, but Joffrey’s death brought about a host of positive events.
It freed Margaery from Joffrey’s cruel hand, allowed Sansa Stark to escape King’s Landing, and, of course, saved the denizens of King’s Landing from Joffrey’s reign.
Aside from the regicide, the Purple Wedding is also notable for its excess and luxury. The feast included 77 dishes, as Jamie confirmed afterward to Tywin: “My sister outdid herself, I’m told. Seventy-seven courses and a regicide, never a wedding like it.” There is a also a trained bear, Pentoshi tumblers, pyromancers, a sword swallower, and a juggler, among other entertainers.
This celebration may have ended in chaos and the death of the groom, but until then, it was lit.
