Prince Humperdinck and Buttercup’s Wedding, The Princess Bride
“Mawwiage is what bwings us togethew today,” this time to discuss yet another stunted wedding between two people who were not meant to be together in The Princess Bride‘s Prince Humperdinck and Buttercup.
Humperdinck, Prince of Florin, is arranged by Count Rugen to be married to Buttercup because she fits his only criterion—she’s very beautiful—and because he needs to continue his family’s lineage. Buttercup, however, is in love with Westley, who was a farmhand on her family’s land, but fears him dead after his ship was attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts as he tried to make his fortune five years previously.
When the time for the ceremony approaches, Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws: Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo Montoya. They are pursued by Prince Humperdinck as well as by the Man in Black (Westley!).
After the outlaws are captured, Buttercup agrees to return to Humperdinck in exchange for Westley’s release. Humperdinck’s plans change, however, and he decides to have Buttercup murdered on their wedding night to start a war with the country of Guilder by framing them.
When Westley, Inigo Montoya, and Fezzik invade the castle, the ceremony is abridged, but Buttercup still believes herself to be legally married and plans to commit suicide.
Westley arrives and tells her that she never said, “I do,” and thus her marriage is invalid. The rightful lovers ride off with Inigo and Fezzik. The Princess Bride may not have given us a wedding between Westley and Buttercup, but it did give us one of the most romantic lines in literature and film: “As you wish.”
