Celeste and Jesse Forever is a better movie than we give it credit for

There are a lot of movies that we’re harsh critics of and I feel like Celeste and Jesse Forever got a bad rap. And it definitely shouldn’t have.

I finally watched Celeste and Jesse Forever today and I was pleasantly surprised. Why? Because most of the people I knew who had seen it said it wasn’t great. Which was shocking to me since I loved the movie.

For those who don’t know, Celeste and Jesse Forever follows a married couple that is getting divorced. They were best friends growing up and once they got married, they fought so much that they separated.

The movie is the two of them trying to find their balance as friends while moving on with their love lives. What’s nice about it is that it doesn’t follow Jesse’s (Andy Samberg) and his journey but rather Celeste (Rashida Jones) and her story.

With the way this movie is structured, it’d be so easy to be about the male character. He was a lowlife without a job who got a girl pregnant while he was still technically married to another woman.

But no, instead, the movie focuses on Celeste, who is the one who initially wanted the separation. It shows her growth as an author and trend specialist for her own company. We see her struggles with men but she is, pretty much, in control the entire movie. And that’s what is truly good about it.

Celeste is never forced into something or if she is, she somehow rises to the occasion and makes the best of it. It also features a random Chris Pine is his own turquoise clothing so honestly, what’s not to love?

Next: Happy birthday to Chris Pine! May your day be filled with books and Sinatra

If you haven’t seen Celeste and Jesse Forever (or haven’t seen it in a while), please watch it. It is fun, fresh, and truly just a great movie.
