10. Turner & Hooch (1989)

Turner & Hooch is a comedy about by-the-book detective Scott Turner (Tom Hanks). He dreams of leaving his small town to work in the big city and does everything necessary to accomplish that goal. Then his friend Amos is murdered and Scott inherits Amos’ dog, a mastiff named Hooch.

Together, Scott and Hooch try to solve the mystery behind Amos’ murder, and Hooch does a lot of serious damage to Scott’s apartment in the meantime. He’s a very big dog with not a lot of coordination who’s used to living in Amos’ junkyard — of course he’s not going to do well in an apartment!

This movie is honestly hilarious and the mastiff in it is one of the most adorably doofy dogs that’s ever been in film. However, as you can see from the trailer, there are moments that are absolutely heartbreaking. Hooch has no desire to listen to Scott because he isn’t Amos, and both Hooch and Scott mourn Amos in their own ways.

Scott isn’t a dog person by any stretch of the imagination, and it takes quite a bit of time for him to learn how to not only take good care of Hooch, but care about him the way you should care about your dog. The emotional beats of Turner & Hooch are well done, but still pretty likely to make you cry, especially because Hooch is so clearly devastated over the loss of his person.

Likelihood of making you cry: 4/10
