14. 101 Dalmatians (1996)

The live-action remake of Disney’s 1961 animated classic 101 Dalmatians is honestly terrifying. Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil still gives me nightmares, 11 years later. She is genuinely scary in that wild hair and intense makeup, and they couldn’t have possibly cast a better actress to play one of the most atrocious villains in Disney history.

The fate of these dalmatian puppies is in jeopardy for the majority of the film, which puts anyone who hasn’t seen it on the edge of their seats. Heck, I have seen it and I still get nervous during the really intense parts of the movie.

101 Dalmatians is likely to make you cry because of its implications. Cruella wants to purchase puppies so she can skin them to make a fur coat. No. Skinning any animal so you can wear its fur is 101 percent not okay. When Cruella doesn’t get her way — because who’s going to sell their dogs’ new puppies so someone can make a coat out of them? — she has her henchmen kidnap the dogs. Obviously.

What follows is a wild chase through the English countryside as the puppies run from Cruella, trying to get home, and Cruella goes after them with a vehemence that’s a little ridiculous. 101 Dalmations is one of those dog movies where the humans are involved, but not nearly as much as the dogs themselves… which makes it preferable to some others. It’s also one of the only live action adaptations of an animated film that got a sequel adapted from the animated sequel. Dalmatians for days!

Likelihood of making you cry: 2/10
