LOS ANGELES, CA – AUGUST 05: Two dogs, a pug named Mugsy (L) and a French bulldog named Cody (R) attend the premiere of Open Road Films’ ‘The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature’ at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live on August 5, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images)

We love dog movies, but we also cry our eyes out during most of them, so this list combines both.

Every time a trailer for a new movie about dogs comes on, I have to leave the room. It’s as bad as those commercials that play Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” If I had the money to adopt all of the needy animals in the world, I would. I’d buy a huge house with a ton of land and start a massive sanctuary. I commend the people who have done this, and I’m a little jealous of them, too. (Especially big shout out to Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary. Thank you for what you do.)

At any rate, even when they’re fictional, animals make me cry. The first movie I ever cried during was Born to Be Wild (1995). I also can’t watch Disney’s The Fox and the Hound because it devastated me so badly as a child that now I’m scarred for life. Don’t even talk about Old Yeller. Keep your Homeward Bound references to yourself.

In honor of National Dog Day, I constructed a list of 15 dog movies ranked by how much they’ll make you cry. If you try to tell me you didn’t cry during any of these movies, I’ll know you’re lying. Unless you haven’t seen any of them, in which case, continue looking at videos of happy dogs on the internet and carry on.
