Since learning that Obi-Wan may get his own standalone, we’ve all been reminded of that time he appeared on Star Wars: Rebels and showed us how cool he is.
“Will they or won’t they?” doesn’t even matter when it comes to whether Lucasfilm really plans to bring an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film to life next. While we all pretty much want to see it happen, there’s still the issue of when it could take place. Lucasfilm already cast two actors to play him as both a young (Ewan McGregor) or old (Alec Guinness) version of the character, so it puts them it sort of a sticky situation. Plus, it would look really silly if they made a movie without Ewan McGregor.
But since an animated series like Star Wars: Rebels doesn’t have to worry about that, they were able to explore as much or as little as they wanted to with the character.
In “Twin Suns,” the twentieth episode of season 3, Obi-Wan Kenobi emerged from the shadows of Tatooine to face Darth Maul. Of course, it completed an arc that first began in The Phantom Menace when Darth Maul killed Obi-Wan’s Jedi master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
Thanks to a new video from Entertainment Weekly, we can see how their final fight came together. As you can see, Dave Filoni and his crew drew inspiration from a lot of different things.
Watch below:
But it’s important to remember that it’s because of George Lucas and guys like Dave Filoni that Darth Maul happens to be so bitter. During the other animated series, The Clone Wars, we learned the Darth Maul survived and turned into Octo-Maul. He debuted to mixed reception, but his survival eventually meant Obi-Wan needed to defeat him once and for all.
Though, I don’t know if a fatal blow to the chest really seals the deal. After all, he survived being cut in half and falling down a shaft.

You can watch the whole confrontation here. But can we all just agree that animated Darth Maul still doesn’t have anything on Ray Park?
Star Wars: Rebels season 3 comes out on Blu-ray on Aug. 29.
