American Horror Story: Cult: What clues are in the opening credits?

The theme song of American Horror Story makes a return, but what sorts of plot points can we find in the opening credits of season 7?

Instead of just featuring lots of spooky and creepy imagery, American Horror Story drops few hints about what’s to come in the season in its opening credits … which, granted, is still spooky and creepy, just meaningfully so, unlike certain parts of the actual episodes themselves.

But, AHS criticisms aside, thanks to TVLine, we now have a look at the credits for American Horror Story: Cult. Let’s try and figure out what exactly we’re going to be seeing this season.

First, it’s time to talk about the theme song, which once again has a new version. This one includes a brass section that reminds us of a darker, more off-putting House of Cards opening, which is pretty fitting considering that yes, this is the season about politics, as TVLine reminds us. If you listen closely, towards the end, you can hear the opening bars of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” played in a more ominous key.

Second, there are a lot of clowns. That’s been an ongoing theme throughout the promotional period for the show, meaning that those with coulrophobia or just general dislike of clowns will probably have to skip these credits, although not necessarily the entire show itself. On a more metafictional level, a “political circus” isn’t a phrase we just made up. Showtime even named its political series The Circus last year.

Additionally, the show has eschewed the American Horror Story title card, going instead for “AHS Cult” as the title. It does shorten the sequence up a little bit, at the very least.

The one thing we don’t quite get at the moment: Why are there bees? There’s even a beekeeper briefly visible with the helmet on.
