Game of Thrones season 7: Will loyalty lead to Jaime’s demise this season?
By Buckie Wells
Despite all his blatant flaws and his attempt to murder a child, Jaime Lannister’s become a pretty decent guy in Game of Thrones. But will his honor be his downfall?
Jaime’s an idiot. That’s really all there is to it. But does that really surprise us? After all, he’s in love with his sister and love makes us all do stupid things. I mean, in this season alone, he defended her on several occasions and justified her tactics as simply a means to an end. And that’s what everyone wants, right? To end the war.
However, Jaime becomes a more compelling character when he’s alone. Whether captured by the enemy, harmlessly flirting with Brienne, or leading his men into battle, it became clear that chivalry really agrees with him. Though villainous at times, he has a lot in common with fan-favorites like Jon Snow. Like Jon, Jaime sticks to his convictions. They both remain loyal to their families, come hell or high water. And we all know that Jon’s choices ultimately led to his death.
So let’s assume the same will happen to Jaime, though I doubt he’ll get a second chance. During “The Spoils of War,” Jaime put himself in quite a precarious position, but he didn’t flee the battlefield at the first sign of trouble. As his men turned to ashes, Jaime fought until the bitter end. Or in this case, until the moment he saw an opportunity to kill Daenerys Targaryen. Though we know he survived, Nikolaj Coster-Waldeu agrees: “Jaime is such an idiot that he thinks for a second, ‘If I can do this, I can win the whole thing in a Hail Mary.'”
But after we learned about Jaime’s fate in “Eastwatch,” another development occurred and took us all by surprise when Jaime had a secret meeting with his younger brother, Tyrion. Again, it was in an effort to end the war, but when Cersei heard about it, she told her brother never to betray her again. At this point, Coster-Waldeu’s words ring especially true:
"“It’s not going to end well for Jaime Lannister, I can’t imagine.”"
Because it’s Game of Thrones, we do need to be prepared for the possibility that everyone but Jaime dies. Though it’s more realistic and probably more satisfying if he dies by the end of this accelerated season 7, which has been more than generous with its satisfaction thus far.

Can we all agree that his misguided love for Cersei, which I will consider loyalty instead of weird incestuous affection, will be the end of him one way or another?
