A compelling villain

Marvel’s movies have an issue with creating compelling villains you really care about. The best in the movies has been Loki, but he came less as a villain and more of a pawn, still kind of one of the “good guys.” Or as good as the God of Mischief can be.

That hasn’t always been the case with Marvel’s Netflix shows. Wilson Fisk and Kilgrave both came through as compelling villains. Cottonmouth was great, but he wasn’t the main villain, and Diamondback just felt like a weird reach. The Hand was more of a threat in Iron Fist, but floundered alongside Elektra. And who the heck knows what Madame Gao is at this point.

For The Defenders, we get Sigourney Weaver, who is playing Alexandra. And… so far, Marvel hasn’t let much be known about her, aside from the fact that’s she’s the head of a very ancient organization.

Sigourney Weaver can play pretty much whatever she wants. She plays characters with such charisma that unless the storytelling comes in weak or problematic, she’s going to have a lot of fun chewing scenery. And causing our Marvel friends a lot of issues.

There are rumors as to who her comics counterpart is, but we’ll keep this spoiler-free and hope the reveal is worth it.
