The once in a lifetime solar eclipse on August 21 has created a solar eclipse travel explosion. Small towns in the solar eclipse path are experiencing a boost to tourism.
On August 21, the solar eclipse will form a large arc across the United States. Considered a once in a lifetime experience, many people are traveling across the United States to view the 2017 solar eclipse. Cities from Oregon to South Carolina will see a large increase in visitors for the event. Solar eclipse travel provides a big boost to some unlikely travel destinations.
While it may be a little late to get some good airfare or hotel deals, these cities offer amazing views of the solar eclipse. Although great cities to visit, the locations aren’t typical for August/end of summer vacations. Even though the viewing will wonderful, these specific cities have even more to offer.
Casper, Wyoming
Solar eclipse watchers are heading to Casper, Wyoming for the higher altitude views of this scientific event. But, “The Oil City” has so many more adventures to offer. Formed from an oil boom, the second largest city in Wyoming has beautiful natural features. From hiking the mountains to the Garden Creek Falls, outdoorsmen will enjoy exploring this area.
As a former cowboy land, Casper offers several tours and historical trails. History museums like, National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, give insight on the area’s history. From the hardships on the trails to the determination to survive, the exhibits define the American spirit.
Whether before or after August 21, visitors should take time to explore the Casper area. Other local views could be just as impressive as the celestial one.

Redmond, Oregon
Another West Coast town is experiencing a solar eclipse travel boom. Located in the center of Oregon, Redmond embraces an outdoor, active lifestyle. In the shadow of the Cascade Range, Redmond residents enjoy hiking, rock climbing and all other types of outdoor activities. Warm days and cool nights make the area an outdoor lover’s dream.
The Smith Rock State Park is a popular stop for outdoorsmen. Other locations like Redmond Caves area and Tumalo Mountain are good choices too. But, all that activity builds up an appetite and thirst. Oregon has an amazing craft beer scene.
Redmond is home to several craft breweries like Wild Ride Brewing, Smith Rock Brewing and Cascade Lakes Brewing. The craft beer scene is tied to the community’s agricultural industry. While it could be hard to hit all the local breweries in a short period of time, one or two stops would be a great idea. Plus, who wouldn’t want a frosty, cold beverage to savor while watching this once in a lifetime event.
Boise, Idaho
Idaho is more than just the potato state. While visitors head to Boise for a great view of the solar eclipse, Boise can charm visitors with bustling downtown area. But before you relax with a great meal and a glass of wine, visitors have so many activities to cross of their list.
Boise has many scenic natural wonders that are as majestic as the solar eclipse. From Sandy Point State Park to the Boise National Forest, natural beauty is all around the city. For a different, historic view, a tour of the Old Idaho Penitentiary Site is filled with history. The 30 buildings offer unique insight on the area’s most dangerous criminals. With 100 years of history, the penitentiary could persuade everyone to stay on the straight and narrow.
The Idaho food and wine scene is growing. Bittercreek is a great Ale House that produces local beer. With robust food menu, the Ale House is a good option for foodies and beer enthusiasts. Also, Boise has several restaurants on Wine Spectator’s 2017 best restaurant lists. Visitors won’t just get potato dishes in Boise.
Columbia, South Carolina
Southern charm is on full display in this mid-size South Carolina city. The state’s capital is bustling with food and culture. While the solar eclipse viewing will be impressive, the food and wine will impress visitors, too.
Southern food is trending. From downhome country favorites to twists on the classics, people are drawn to the Southern tradition. Every price point is part of the Columbia food scene. High dollar options or popular dives all offer some amazing food options. Don’t miss the opportunity to try at least one local restaurant.
Sometimes, the quirky stops are the most memorable. While visitors could stop at the State Capitol or Robert Mills House, a fun stop is the World’s Largest Fire Hydrant. One of the stops listed in Roadside America, the titled Fire Hydrant is meant to look as if it was knocked over. The stop makes for a great photo.

These cities are just a few of the smaller towns experiencing a travel boom because of solar eclipse travel. Even if you don’t get to see the solar eclipse from the direct path, take a moment to look to the sky (with protective glasses of course). An once in a lifetime experience shouldn’t go unnoticed.
