Karen Gillan would make an incredible Joker for the DCEU
By Samantha Puc
At Florida Supercon this weekend, Karen Gillan confessed that she would love to take a crack at playing the Joker in the DCEU, and we are so here for it.
Karen Gillan has already tackled two massive roles in the sci-fi and comics universes. She played Amy Pond on Doctor Who and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Volumes 1 & 2. Gillan will reprise the latter in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, but she wants to dive into yet another massive franchise. More Karen Gillan? We’re all for it.
Over the weekend, in an appearance at Florida Supercon, Gillan said she would love to play Batman’s arch nemesis, the Joker. “Oh, can I say something DC?” Gillan said. “OK, I’m going to say something DC, and I’m going to play the Joker. Maybe a female Joker.”
It would work. In the DC event Flashpoint, Martha Wayne was the Joker. The potential for Gillan to dive into the role is there. DCEU recently renamed its Flash film Flashpoint. Oh, yeah. Imagine Karen Gillan acting opposite Ezra Miller. The banter would be endless, and Gillan has proven that she’s capable of playing emotionally-heavy roles. (Amy’s last episode of Doctor Who still makes me cry.) Plus, she’s down to change her appearance, and she seems genuinely excited about the idea of Martha Wayne.
We are, too. Since Heath Ledger played the villain in The Dark Knight, there’s only been one other actor cast in the role and he ruined it. Suicide Squad‘s Jared Leto squandered the Joker by creeping out his co-stars and getting mostly cut from the film. I doubt we would see that behavior from Karen Gillan.
Gillan would surely embody the role in a cool, new way. We need more women in the DCEU — as evidenced by Wonder Woman‘s smashing success — and that includes villains. Honestly, if we could replace all of the male leads in the DCEU with their female counterparts, that would be the best thing ever.

Although Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) has previously played Martha Wayne in the DCEU, Gillan could still snag the role. Superhero franchises phase out actors and introduce new ones all the time. Who’s to say Gillan can’t show her villainous side in both Marvel and DC films?
