Is JK Rowling showing us we’re living in a Voldemort age?

JK Rowling often takes to Twitter to talk about the current President of the United States. Is there a larger reason for her disdain?

Everyone knows about what’s happening in the world. I don’t need to go over the triggering news that we wake up to every day, especially if you’re an American. JK Rowling has never been silent on her views of our President, and got me thinking…why?

Obviously, there’s the fact that she just plain disagrees with him, which is important. However, I don’t know that I’ve seen a British celebrity take to Twitter so often as I’ve seen JK Rowling. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s inspiring. It shows me, personally, how much our country affects everyone. It gives me a lesson about the trickle down effect that our government has on the rest of the world.

But it also got me thinking. Why is JK Rowling, specifically, speaking out so loudly against our President? Then, as I began to draw comparisons, I realized…is it because it reminds her of Voldemort?

Think about it. Voldemort was a leader who had followers that believed in purity, that believed one type of person was better than another. He installed ministers that were puppets that would do what he wanted.

Death Eaters

First, the Death Eaters dress up a lot like the Nazi and KKK clan that we see so often since the election of the President. They prefer pureblood wizards over half blood or muggle. This could be a symbolism for LGBT or minorities marrying. It shows that Voldemort believed there was an order to the people of the world. Purebloods, halfbloods, muggles.

Is that so unlike what we’re seeing today? The people who believe that white people, especially white men, are better than people who are gay, of a different religion, or skin color?

The War

While we haven’t had a straight out “war” break out, we’ve been coming pretty close. Look at what happened this week in Charlottesville. Is it war? No. But is it the same as Death Eaters coming together to show that their beliefs are right?

We can speculate all day about the similarities between The Wizarding War and the recent uprise in the United States. But when it comes down to it, I believe it’s the reason that JK Rowling is so outspoken. Besides the fact that it’s the right thing to do, it’s because we’re heading in a direction so much like the world she wrote. A leader who believes people who are different are bad, constant uprisings, people scared — and then a second uprising when people thought it had calmed down.

Like Voldemort, no one wanted to believe that the current election would come to this. It’s reminiscent of no one believing Voldemort is back.

Perhaps one of the many reasons JK Rowling is so willing to go against the President of the United States is that she doesn’t want to see her books come to life.
