Wait. Did the final battle scene in Game of Thrones season 7 episode 4 just kill off one of our favorite characters?
Warning: spoilers ahead.
In the final moments of Game of Thrones season 7 episode 4 Sunday night, the show ended with Jaime Lannister in his heavy armor sinking in the waters beside the battle Jack in Titanic-style. Does this mean Jaime is dead?! Let’s break it down.
In a relatively quiet episode, action-wise, up until this point, we see Jaime and Bronn reveling in their victory against House Tyrell. Jaime conveniently leaves the savage little barb Lady Olenna pierced him with at the end of the last episode out of the conversation. There’s a older brothery exchange with Dickon Tarly, who admits he wasn’t prepared to have to kill some former hunting buddies from House Tyrell. Jaime assures him his friends didn’t deserve to die, it was Olenna’s betrayal that demanded the show of force.
The men’s conversation is quickly interrupted, however, when seasoned soldier Bronn senses danger headed their way. Jaime, Bronn, Dickon, and Lord Tarly do their best to ready the troops but sure enough, an army of Dothraki is charging in their direction. As if that weren’t horrifying enough, the horde of soldiers is followed by, who else but Daenerys Targaryen, swooping in atop one of her dragons.
Jaime gathers his archers to take aim at the flying fire machine, they make contact but it doesn’t do much. What does make an impact? The massive dragon-killing contraption Cersei got a good look at back in episode 2 of this season. With Jaime unable to operate the machine one-handed, Bronn jumps in to help. He zeroes in on Dany and hits her dragon on the second try.
Dany’s dragon cries out in pain and lands on the battlefield, where Dany struggles to pull the arrow from her body. That’s where Jaime sees his opening.
At first, it seems like Jaime may be feeling sympathy for Dany here. We’ve already seen Jaime soften toward female enemies like Olenna Tyrell and others in the past. But it soon becomes apparent that instead Jaime is calculating his risk. He charges toward Dany and her dragon, spear raised.
From a nearby hilltop, Tyrion looks on in horror, urging his brother to flee under his breath. Spoiler alert: Jaime can’t hear him (and likely would ignore his advice anyway, he already scoffed at Bronn’s insistence that he leave the battling to the infantrymen).
Dany goes full deer-in-headlights as she sees Jaime approaching, but of course her loyal dragon steps in with a stream of fire sprayed directly at the threat. That’s when Bronn dives in to save the day—or possibly doom he and Jaime to horrible drowning deaths?
We’d probably lean toward the former. It seems Jaime has unfinished business with Cersei and Tyrion and his death would certainly put a damper on things for the remainder of the show. Bronn, on the other hand, we could see meeting his demise. (In fact, it’s one of the deaths we predicted for this week’s episode.) He’s enough of a main character that it would be an emotional blow, but not enough of a main character that the show would feel lacking without him.

Then again, this is Game of Thrones. Ned Stark lost his head right at the beginning of the series. So really, anything could happen.
