Jack Thorne is taking on Star Wars and we’re a little angry

When it comes to things white men get to do, there isn’t really a limit and now Jack Thorne gets to write Star Wars Episode IX.

Jack Thorne and Colin Trevorrow prove that if you’re a white dude, mediocre work leads to you getting to do a Star Wars movie. Oh, I’m sorry, let me clarify. Jack Thrones, responsible for the glorified fanfiction known as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is now getting to write the ninth installment in the Star Wars saga.

For those who don’t know who Colin Trevorrow is either, he made Jurassic World (which is fine) and then a pretty terrible movie called The Book of Henry. And here’s the thing, if a woman, person of color, or anyone other than a white man tried to pull this stuff, they’d love the movie.

But I guess it works for white men! So yay for Jack Thorne for now getting to write a Star Wars movie when his fanfiction play is taking over the world.

Is the Cursed Child good?

Okay I think I need to clarify. I don’t hate Cursed Child. In fact it’s quite good. But it does things with Harry and his character that make me question whether or not Jack has ever read a Harry Potter book in his life.

So for him to try and tackle Star Wars, an arguably bigger beast, frightens me. And I’m not the only one, judging by Twitter. It just shows that there still isn’t an ease to Hollywood, not for women or people of color. If you’re a white man, you can get away with mediocre work and still get to do the cool things. And honestly, it’s just not fair.

Next: Another birthday come and gone but we still love Harry Potter

But this is what we have to deal with in the world. And so it brings us to a bigger question: is Star Wars Episode IX going to be any good? Well, we’ll have to wait and see what Jack Thorne and Colin Trevorrow chose to do but honestly, I’m not excited about it.
