Minnesota : Purple Rain

The legendary Prince brought his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota to the film Purple Rain. Making his acting debut, Prince starred as The Kid. The semi-autobiographical story is about a musician trying to make his way through a tumultuous life.

The movie is set in Minneapolis. The First Avenue & 7th Street Entry was featured predominantly in the film. Established in 1970, the venue is considered the longest continual running music venue and entertainment establishment. After beginning as a disco club, the club became legendary because of its association with Prince.

First Avenue & 7th Street Entry was considered Prince’s home club. He often performed new music at venue. Like in the movie, the venue was home to the Minneapolis R&B scene.

Today, First Avenue & 7th Street Entry is still a great concert venue. The location stays true to its mission, “our doors are always open to the thousands of music lovers who are First Avenue’s past, present, and future.”

Another Minneapolis landmark featured in Purple Rain was Cedar Lake. Located west of downtown Minneapolis, Cedar Lake is part of the Minnesota Chain of Lakes. It is home to numerous native grasses, wildflowers, and trees. While visitors may not have epic romantic encounters like in the movie, the Cedar Lake area offers a beautiful view.

After Prince’s untimely death, some additional Minneapolis tours are available. While these tours may not be movie specific, the tours offer an eclectic view of the city.
