I Know What You Did Last Summer, from the movie trailer

North Carolina: I Know What You Did Last Summer

Growing up, some rites of passage are common. A summer trip with friends before heading off to college is the subject of many movies, books, and some people’s personal memories. When those experiences are blended with urban legends, the story is the basis of a popular movie.

The 1997 movie I Know What You Did Last Summer was a success. While not considered the most critically acclaimed film, the movie was popular with audiences. The thriller follows four friends a year after they’re involved in a fatal car accident and try to cover it up, when frightening things start to happen to them.

Filmed in North Carolina, the movie used several real locations. Fourth of July Croaker Festival is an actual North Carolina event. Held in Oriental, North Carolina, the annual festival celebrates the local fishing community. It is usually held around the Fourth of July, but not always on the actual date.

If you can’t visit the area around the summer holiday, other locations from the movie are open throughout the year. Ollie’s Oyster Bar is a real restaurant, except it has a different name. Located in Southport’s Yacht Basin, Old American Fish Company offers amazing water and sunset views and is a popular place to gather. It is considered by some to be a dive bar. But people go there for a cold drink, great water view and good times. Old American Fish Company is located at 150 Yacht Basin Drive, in Southport.

And as long as you’re not hiding any crimes, you can rest easy knowing a vengeful fisherman won’t come after you on your visit.
