Montana: A River Runs Through It

You can’t get much better than Brad Pitt and fly fishing.

Based on a book, A River Runs Through It, the 1992 movie is considered semi-biographical. The story follows two brothers as they grow up in Montana. While brothers, the two men are not alike. One brother likes school and excels. The other brother would rather follow his own path. But fishing bonds them and their father.

Raised by a preacher, the father teaches the boys how to fish. Over time, they become accomplished fly fishermen. The fishing scenes were filmed on the Yellowstone River. The movie’s popularity caused an increased interest in fly fishing and the Yellowstone River fishing area.

Today, several tours offer fishing trips on the Yellowstone River. The Yellowstone River is the longest river in Montana. Fishermen come to the area for trout fishing. It is considered one of the best trout fishing areas in the world.

In addition to fishing, the area offers a wide array of outdoor activities. Visitors can raft down the river and some areas offer zipling.

While the fishing was a big character in the movie, the city of Livingston was the backdrop. Livingston is a popular tourist location. The area boasts several archaeological sites. Also, it is home to railroad museums and the International Fly Fishing Federation’s museum.
