Alaska: Into the Wild

Jon Krakauer’s haunting book Into the Wild followed the true story of Christopher Johnson McCandless, a young man who left his comfortable life to hitchhike to Alaska in 1992. McCandless’ life was cut short on his journey, but the wilderness near Alaska’s Mt. McKinley became its own character in Krakauer’s account of McCandless’ life and the subsequent movie adaptation.

Denali National Park and Preserve is featured in the movie Into the Wild. With more than 6 million acres, this national park contains all types of land features. From the highest mountain in North America to lush forests, the national park is a favorite with wilderness lovers.

Recreational visitors enjoy dogsledding and cross country skiing during the winter months. But, traveling in the winter can be difficult. Roads are limited and the area can be isolated.

During the summer, travel access is easier. Buses can access the road more easily. Many guests enjoy photographing the area because the scenery is quite beautiful. Other activities include hiking, exploring the wilderness and even bird watching.

Denali National Park is the only national park with working sled dogs. Park rangers are happy to answer questions. Also, dog sled demonstrations are sometimes available.
