Colorado – City Slickers

Some people feel the need to abandon their daily, boring grind for a big adventure. In the Billy Crystal movie, City Slickers, three New Yorkers head out on a cattle drive to rediscover themselves.

Friends often want the best for each other, especially when that friendship stood the test of time. City Slickers is, at its heart, a story of friendship among three men. As they reach a turning point in their lives, this cattle ranch adventure is more than a mid-life crisis solution. The adventure helps them to rediscover a small part of themselves.

The popularity of City Slickers caused a spike in cattle ranch/dude ranch adventures. Parts of the movie was filmed in Durango, Colorado. The movie was filmed on a real, working ranch. According to a Legacy Properties West listing, the ranch may be available for sale. The property offers a homestead, pond, and stream. At 230 acres, the area is close to Historic Durango. Unfortunately, the $2.6 million price tag seems quite high.

An easy way to get the dude ranch feel from the movie is to visit Durango itself. Located in La Plata County, Durango is a popular vacation destination. The downtown area is home to many restaurants, shops, and a few historic hotels. According to a visitor website, Durango has “more restaurants per capita than San Francisco.”

Many visitors plan stays at the popular Purgatory Resort. This resort showcases the beauty and grandeur of the Four Corners region. From skiing in the winter to hiking in the summer, there are many outdoor activities for all ages.
