New Mexico: Cowboys and Aliens

New Mexico is a majestic state. The natural formations and cliffs have inspired artists for centuries. Additionally, the ancient cultures that called his area home draw many history lovers. While not necessarily the most successful film, Cowboys and Aliens highlighted several of New Mexico’s natural landscapes.

Cowboys and Aliens was a film based on a graphic novel. Set in the Old West, aliens try to take over Earth. While the special effects in the movie somewhat lead to its downfall, the New Mexico scenic landscape was impressive.

Plaza Blanca, the site of the alien ship, is home to magnificent limestone cliffs. Unlike other New Mexico areas, these cliffs are white. Pictures show that the area has unusual spires. Some people have described this area as other worldly, eerie, and exotic.

This unusual landscape has inspired artists. New Mexico artist, Georgia O’Keefe, featured the landmark in her painting, “The White Palace.” Others consider these cliffs a spiritual area. Shirley McClain has described the area as having a “transformational power.”

Plaza Blanca is open to hikers. Before traveling to the area, it is best to be prepared for weather and all types of hiking conditions. Provisions, good shoes, and a hiking plan should be considered before heading out to explore. Plaza Blanca is about an hour north of Santa Fe. It is close to Ghost Ranch, the home and studio of Georgia O’Keefe.
