Kentucky: Secretariat
Only a few thoroughbred horses have won the Triple Crown. The combination of strength, speed, and something special doesn’t happen every year. The 2010 movie, Secretariat, chronicles the 1973 Triple Crown-winning horse and its owner.
Kentucky and horse racing go together like Kentucky and bourbon. The Bluegrass state is known for its beautiful, lush pastures which are created by the area’s fertile soil. The region is perfect for the many horse farms. Secretariat was filmed in both Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky.
Being a movie about horseracing, Secretariat was filmed at the iconic Churchill Downs. Every year, the first race of the Triple Crown is the Kentucky Derby. Held at Churchill Downs, the annual run for the roses is a huge draw for Louisville, Kentucky. The race is the “longest continually running sporting event” in the United States. Ladies wear stylish hats, gentlemen dress in their dapper best, and the mint juleps flow. Everyone watches intently the fastest two minutes in sport.
While tickets to the actual Kentucky Derby may be difficult to obtain, Churchill Downs is open throughout the year. The race track was opened in 1875. It hosts numerous horse racing events. Guests can purchase general admission tickets to the grounds, but special events may be ticketed separately.
Located by Churchill Downs is the Kentucky Derby Museum. General admission tours include a walking tour of the racetrack, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to meet some horses. Additionally, expanded tours are also available. The museum is open seven days a week. To pre-purchase tickets, please visit the website.
