Iowa: Field of Dreams
Even non-baseball fans probably have heard the phrase “If you build it, they will come.” The iconic line from Kevin Costner’s baseball film, Field of Dreams, is a classic. The story is simple. An Iowa farmer is “inspired” by mysterious voices to build a baseball field at his farm. He does and a ghostly team of baseball greats comes to play at the field.
While people can debate the sound reasoning of building a baseball field because of hearing voices, the movie resonated with moviegoers and baseball fans. Field of Dreams is considered the movie about Iowa. Today, fans, both of the movie and baseball, can visit the actual “Field of Dreams.”
Located in Dyserville, Iowa, Field of Dreams, the movie location, was actual farmland. The owner, Don Lansing, was approached by the Iowa Film Board when they were scouting film locations. It was eventually decided that his property would be the film’s location.
Visitors can tour the baseball field for free. The location is open year round, but the times vary depending on the season. Home tours can be scheduled in advance and tickets are $20. Also, groups can book a guided “ghost player” bus tour, where a “ghost player” from the movie shares stories about the area and movie.
A special annual event, the Team of Dreams, happens in September. Some Major League players come back to play in a seven inning celebrity game. This year, the game will be held over Labor Day weekend. Tickets can be purchased online.
