Georgia: Sweet Home Alabama

Based on the movie’s name, you might think that the movie was filmed in a different Southern state. Georgia was home to many of the iconic movie moments of Sweet Home Alabama. Part of the movie’s charm is the Southern eccentricities. From the grand plantation homes to the Civil War reenactment, the old South was on full display.

Sweet Home Alabama stars Reese Whitherspoon as a women torn between two men. One is her polished fiancée and the other is her down-home estranged husband. The romantic comedy is fun and endearing.

One of the featured locations in the movie was the Cartwright Mansion. This location is the Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum in Rome, Georgia. Part of the Berry College, the museum is part historical museum and part art museum. The building featured in the movie is Oak Hill, a Greek revival mansion dating back to the Civil War period. Tours of the museum and grounds are available Monday through Saturday, but are subject to change. For the current schedule, please visit the organization’s Facebook page for exact information.

The other famous scene from Sweet Home Alabama is the Civil War reenactment. This scene was filmed at International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia. This location was the site of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Equestrian events. Today, the site hosts equestrian events, mountain biking events, concerts, and various other private events. Located near the middle of the park is a nature center, golf course, and hotel.
