Oregon: The Goonies

Some movies stand the test of time. The coming of age films, even with unstylish clothes and old references, bring laughs over and over. The Goonies is one of those movies. The 1985 movie is about a group of kids who try to uncover the treasure of One Eyed Willy. But, the kids aren’t the only people who want that treasure.

Luckily, the treasure hunt actually occurred in some real, not movie set created, locations. Set in Oregon, the Goonies’ adventures can be recreated by fans. A large amount of the film was shot in Astoria, Oregon.

Just like the kids’ bike ride in the film, everyone can enjoy an outdoor day at Ecola State Park. Located a short distance from Astoria, Ecola State Park offers great hiking and amazing views from the cliffs. Also, surfers can try their hand at some of the breaking waves. For the less adventurous, the area is great for a leisurely picnic. The area is full of wildlife, which can make for some entertainment while eating.

A few other Astoria landmarks were used in filming. The best place to relive Goonies-related memories is the Oregon Film Museum. This building was previously old Clatsop County Jail. The jail was featured in the movie. Today, the converted jail holds a large collection of Goonies memorabilia.

The Oregon Film Museum celebrates the many movies that have been filmed in Oregon. In addition to the Goonies, other popular films, like Kindergarten Cop, Animal House and Stand By Me, were filmed in Oregon.
