Remember the tweet Taylor Swift sent out about Kelsea Ballerini’s self-titled EP? That’s where their friendship formed and ever since then, it’s only getting stronger.
When Kelsea Ballerini first started her music career, she knew she hadn’t found her voice yet. As a young songwriter, Ballerini admits to Cosmopolitan that she was learning from her idols. She figured out how to write songs from Taylor Swift and Shania Twain. According to Ballerini, the songs she wrote sounded a lot like the songs she had heard on the radio.
“The reality was, they were already on the radio, and so no one wanted to hear what I had to say, cause it was already said,” she confessed. That was then, and she’s come along way since writing her first song.
“It’s okay to love other artists and okay to take notes from them and learn from them, but I think discovering what you want to say in your voice is the most important thing you can do as an artist – especially as a female,” she states. Well said, and very true.
While the country songstress has found her voice and is making hit after hit, she still credits Swift for helping her. “Taylor launched and completely changed the music industry in the most amazing way. I really think that she blazed a trail for all my fellow new women in country,” she says. “I’ve always looked up to Taylor, so when she tweeted about my EP before my album even came out, I think the fact that she did that was her kind of being like, I was a young singer/songwriter on an independent label, I feel you. And that was the first moment of us relating to each other”.
What a sweet friendship and bond Swift and Ballerini have. We can’t wait to see if these two collaborate some day.
