LONDON, ENGLAND – JULY 30: J. K. Rowling attends the press preview of ‘Harry Potter

Consider: an invisibility cloak.

Harry Potter receives an invisibility cloak from an anonymous gifter at his first Hogwarts Christmas. Later, we find out it was Dumbledore that sent the cloak. It once belonged to Harry’s father, James, and it has a long, magical history that comes to full fruition in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It’s one of a kind, and it’s the only invisibility cloak in the world that makes the wearer truly invisible. It will never wear down, or wear out, or lose its magic. It’s remarkable.

Since we’ve never seen J.K. Rowling’s notes on Harry Potter, nor do we have proof that Hogwarts doesn’t really exist, it’s safe to assume that she could have written at least some of her ideas on an invisibility cloak. Maybe not Harry’s, since it’s still in his possession, but a lesser one, certainly.

Thinking of the Harry Potter series as a very elaborate, alternate history is mind-boggling, but also really fun. The idea that the wizarding world really does exist is a magical one that will never quite leave my mind. Growing up with Harry, Hermione, Ron, and all their friends created an escape that few other book series ever did. Some small, childish part of me will never give up on the idea that these characters are as real as you or I, and that somewhere in the world they’re living their best lives.
