Ginny Weasley

Ginny Weasley is the youngest of seven children and the only girl, which instills intense fierceness in her. She’s a Gryffindor through and through. She’s also a super talented seeker, a survivor, and a strong fighter.

It may seem strange to have Ginny on a list of underappreciated ladies in the Potter-verse, because everyone loves Ginny. Right? But consider: so many of the elements that make Ginny such a loveable, take-no-nonsense character are things we never see. J.K. Rowling tells us these things, but Ginny is talked about more often than she talks herself, which is a problem.

It’s a total disservice. Ginny is easily one of the most interesting, layered characters in this series, and J.K. Rowling doesn’t give her nearly enough page time.

The movies are worse. Ginny Weasley gets reduced to the simpering girl who only wants to kiss Harry Potter. This reduction is frankly infuriating. Her journey through the series is rife with material outside of her relationship to Harry. She befriends a memory of young Voldemort in her desperation to be understood, then quietly saddles the weight of having been possessed by him for years. Plus, her Quidditch career is born out of defiance. When Ginny’s brothers tell her she can’t play Quidditch with them, she sneaks brooms out the family shed to practice alone.

Furthermore, she puts herself first in her relationships, which is something that is not only admirable, but enviable. Ginny Weasley deserves so much better than what she got.
