The new Stranger Things Season 2 trailer “thrills”
In the just-released season 2 trailer for Netflix’s Stranger Things, we got a look at new monsters, Ghostbusters costumes, and, yes, Eleven.
Saturday was chock full of new trailers thanks to the panels at San Diego Comic-Con, and Netflix came to play as well, unveiling the trailer for the second season of its breakout hit Stranger Things.
The theme of the day Saturday could have been ’80s nostalgia. Warner Bros. Pictures also debuted its teaser for Ready Player One, essentially a love letter to the decade, which featured the Iron Giant and the DeLorean.
Stranger Things is dealing in that same currency, relishing in all the visuals that spark those pleasant feelings for those who came of age in the ’80s or simply hold the decade dear in their hearts.
The trailer opens on our intrepid young friends—Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will—riding their bikes to the arcade to play Dragon’s Lair, presumably not long after the events of the first season transpired.
But, as we saw at the end of the first season, Will still maintains a connection to the Upside Down—a sort of tether between that world and the real world of Hawkins, Indiana—and it’s not long before things get a little spooky.
Cut to Will, suddenly alone, in the Upside Down-ifed real world staring down a huge, tentacled monster in the sky that makes the “Demogorgon” of season 1 look cute by comparison.
As Vincent Price’s monologue from “Thriller” plays in the background, we see a montage of creepy scenes: the kids running at night with flashlights, a blood-spattered chair, the friends dressed up as Ghostbusters for Halloween (okay, that one’s just cute), and a shadowy presence chasing Will through a hallway.
But, as was true of all the day’s trailers, the best moment came right at the end.
Eleven is back!
The trailer’s final shot is Eleven reaching her hand through a wall from the Upside Down back into Hawkins.
And as for Barb?
Actress Shannon Purser made an appearance at the Stranger Things panel to ask the question on everyone’s minds: Will Barb be in season 2?

The answer, sadly, is no, but at least we have Eleven and the rest of the gang to look forward to on October 27.
