Here is your first look at Ready Player One

We got our first look at Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Here’s what we know.

The first teaser trailer for Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg and set to be released in March 2018, premiered at Warner Bros. Pictures’ San Diego Comic-Con 2017 panel, to the delight of everyone who fell in love with Ernest Cline’s best-selling 2011 novel of the same name.

Let’s be honest; if you didn’t come of age in the ’80s, you wish you did. The nostalgia for and romanticization of the decade is real, and one of the most recent (and perfect) examples of that is Cline’s novel.

Ready Player One is set in the not-so-distant future—the year 2045. Earth has been ravaged by an energy crisis and civilized society is crumbling.

To cope, people have become dependent on the OASIS, a virtual-reality world created by wealthy gamer and lover of the ‘80s James Donovan Halliday (aka Anorak).

Citizens can live an entire virtual-reality life inside the OASIS, complete with schools and currency. But when Halliday dies and his will reveals that he has hidden an Easter egg inside the game that will award his vast fortune to whomever discovers it, players take on a new role—“gunters,” or egg hunters.

One of the game’s premier gunters is teenager Wade Watts (aka Parzival), and the novel opens with him discovering the first clue to finding Halliday’s Easter egg about five years after his death.

We got our first look at the world of Spielberg’s Ready Player One in mid-July when Entertainment Weekly published a photo that magically brought the world of the book to life.

And, keeping in line with the novel itself, the still contained multiple Easter eggs, including a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe tin lunchbox and a photo of Halliday on the cover of Wired magazine.

Anyone who loved Ready Player One the novel did so partly because of all the ‘80s pop culture references contained therein, but it would be impossible for the film to cover them all. Thus, this was a nice peek at which ones we might get to see turn up.

As for the trailer released Saturday, it was truly a teaser. Watts, played by Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse), gives us an overview of the state of the world from his hideout in the Stacks in Columbus, Ohio via voiceover.

Then, he puts on his OASIS visor, and we are treated to a stunning glimpse of the virtual-reality world, set to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” (because of course). It’s complete with Freddy Krueger and the Iron Giant, because that’s what the OASIS can do.

We can only guess at what other pop culture references the movie will contain, but luckily there will be more trailer releases between now and March 30, 2018.
